Sunday Swan Blogging

On 14th July I saw that the mute swans who nest each year on the Water of Leith had hatched seven cygnets. (Seven Swans Swimming)

Almost exactly a month later I saw the whole family again: still seven cygnets and two adult swans:

seven cygnets, two swans

There’s a pair of mute swans on the Water of Leith that have been hatching a bevy there for years: this year there are seven cygnets swimming with their parents. (You can see the photos I took last year here.)

This photo is available on Redbubble: Swans on the river.

Summer night on the Shore

summer on the shore

I love the richness of the light reflections on the river after sunset in the summer, in the white nights. This photo is available on Redbubble: Summer Night on the Shore.

The Prince Regent Street Waterfall

On Monday 9th June I was walking down Prince Regent Street, and I noticed a stream running down the gutter.

So I tracked it uphill to its source:

And a couple of days later, walking down Prince Regent Street again, I took a photo of the drain all the water was falling into.

Over a week later, the water is still running, and it’s now overflowed the drain and forms a delta where Prince Regent Street runs into North Junction Street:

Up at the source, the water has by now washed away part of the tarmac covering the old cobbles:

It’s quite impressive that just leaving a water main to run unchecked and unmended for only eight or nine days can do this much damage. I wonder how much longer Edinburgh Council will leave it to run?

Dirty Leith: the Water of Leith

litter and leaves on the Water of Leith

It is sort of interesting, sort of disgusting, sort of attractive, and mostly just appalling, all at once. (This is one of the parts of the river where litter – leaf litter and other stuff) fetch up: most parts are cleaner. Still.)

This photo is available on Redbubble:The Water of Leith.
