Edinburgh often appears to be a city of stone, without gardens. But most of the older blocks of flats – five or six or more storeys high – will be built like a wall surrounding an inner garden, shared by all the flats in the block, with stairs leading upwards from the basement level to the garden within.

PS: Policy change! (However absurd that sounds when I’ve only been doing this for two weeks!) I’ve been awake and updating this blog at midnight, but it’s getting wearisome: from now on, the daily update will occur at about 7am GMT. – So tomorrow, or rather later today, there will be a second update, and thereafter once every 24 hours as before except for special occasions/announcements/excuses.)
