Lothian Road: Doors reflecting

The cinema turned Bingo hall, now derelict and empty, reflects the shiny new towers across the road in its doors.

Tree in water

Along by Dock Place, just before you veer left into the pedestrianised walkway facing the Scottish Government, there’s a dead-end cobbled street, planted with young trees that will someday provide shade, and a stretch of gutter that gets blocked and floods the cobbled street after any heavy rain. A good place for reflections.

I took this photo here. It’s available on Redbubble: Tree in water and in a 2009 calendar: Strange Sky.

Zersenay Tadese Omni

The 36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships will take place in Holyrood Park tomorrow. I don’t know if Zersenay Tadese of Eritrea will be there, but he leaps out of the tall glass wall at the Omni Centre at top of Leith Walk, unmissable.

Zersenay Tadese in the Omni centre

Zersenay Tadese was the winner of the Men’s Long Race at the 2007 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa: he ran 12 kilometers in 35 minutes 50 seconds. He also ran the Great North Run in 2005, won a bronze medal at the Olympics in Athens in 2004, and won the 10,000 m at the All-Africa Games in Algiers in 2007.

Botanics: Autumn leaf

Sorry for the lateness! It has been a terrible day. 😦

This weekend the clocks go back: we’re all cheated of an hour of sleep. To celebrate this weird and awful thing, let me post a picture of autumn in springtime.

Shadows and haar

Looking down Hanover Street towards the Royal Scottish Academy Building, on a haar-thick winter morning in December: where the shadow falls, the pavements are still wet enough with the water from the air to reflect back the light, but in direct sunlight the moisture evaporates fast and the pavements begin to look dry within minutes. A classic Edinburgh day.

I took this photo here. It’s available on Redbubble: Shadows and haar.

Broughton Street: In Artisan Roast

Artisan Roast is a coffee shop where you could get high just breathing the air: they grind half a dozen varieties of beans on the premises. They have a sign on the wall: J. K. Rowling did not write Harry Potter here.

I took this photo here. It’s available on Redbubble: In Artisan Roast.

The Raj by the Shore

The Raj by the Shore

The Raj Restaurant on the Shore does really delicious food, and is a lovely place to eat, looking out over the Water of Leith.

I took this photo here. It’s available on Redbubble: The Raj by the Shore.

Update, 25th March: I’ve been invited to a £20 fundraising buffet for Powerful Partnerships at the Raj: excellent! Thursday 3rd April 2008, 7.30pm onwards.
“Tickets are £20, which I know sounds steep, but you can eat as much as you like of the Raj’s delicious cuisine and the restaurant will then give back 50 per cent of the bill back to Powerful Partnerships- which will be spent on the summer BBQ for all our advocates and their partners.”
