Old Odeon, South Clerk Street

The 1930 Edinburgh Odeon is a Category B listed cinema. The outside doesn’t look like much, but inside – when we were allowed in – it is pure Edwardian “Italian Renaissance” – dramatic and splendid, from when going to the cinema was a treat, not a cardboard package. Offers over £3.5m for the building, apparently, so if you have some spare change, go for it.

I took this photo here. It’s available on Redbubble: Cinema, South Clerk Street.

  2. Just so!

It really is a glorious building inside. If I had £3.5 million to spare I’d buy it and make it the new Gay Centre.

  3. that is – or was – a beautiful cinema. i went to that cinema on the first day that i ever came to edinburgh (i think i saw “Almost Famous”?) there always used to be long queues of teenagers outside the cinema, but, strangely, the management claimed that it wasn’t making money. i only hope that it will be a cinema again one day, and not something very inappropriate (a “hair studio”, a health food store, another Starbucks)

  4. I read somewhere (probably the Evening News) that when it was bought by a property development company in 2003, they planned to rip the whole of the inside out and just turn it into another boxy night club. Fortunately a bunch of people fought them off and got it Listed, so now whoever buys it has to preserve the interior.

I remember the lovely curve of steps going up to the bar. I miss that cinema.
