“In the mid-19th century, Scottish housing reformers sought an alternative to the traditional tenement and there was a deliberate movement to find a working-class housing pattern which broke with the tradition and gave every family a front door and its own garden ground.” – Edinburgh Architecture
A stair in Edinburgh usually means an enclosed street. From 1850 a collective of working-class Edinburghers formed a building society that funded the design and construction of colonies of better housing than had ever existed before in Edinburgh for working-class families: each small flat with its own front door, and open stair, and bit of garden.
