Eduardo Paolozzi was born in Leith in 1924, was interned in Saughton Prison for three months from June 1940 (his parents were Italian citizens), went to Edinburgh College of Art in 1943, and studied at the Slade School in London. He was awarded an honorary degree by Edinburgh University in February 2005, and died in April that year.
